What Do Guards Do?
Guards deploys 3 ground-only melee units, each wearing a shield that absorbs the first hit it takes. That shield gives every unit extra effective hitpoints before real damage starts landing, making them noticeably harder to clear than a plain 3-unit swarm.
Once the shields are broken, the skeletons underneath have relatively low hitpoints, so their durability comes almost entirely from that first layer of protection.
Where Guards Fit
They work well as a durable defensive answer to single-target win conditions, since the shields let them survive an extra hit each and continue fighting back rather than being cleared instantly.
How to Counter Guards
Splash damage that lands multiple hits, or spells strong enough to break through a shield and still deal lethal damage, can clear the group more efficiently than single-target troops trading one at a time.
